These 14 songs tell the stories that
Jesus told to teach his people about repentance and
forgiveness, to help them understand how to love
and how to hope. The teachings and parables,
so often heard,
take on a fresh beauty when they are supported
by highly singable melodies. “When
the Noonday Sun was Burning” tells us
about Jesus meeting the woman at the well. “At
Bethany Village” introduces
us to Mary and Martha. “On the Jericho Highway” retells
the parable of the good Samaritan while the ballad “A
Prodigal Son” is, of course, Jesus’ most
deeply appreciated story. “Rich and Poor” uses
a delightful Slovak tune and “Jesus Sent Forth
His Disciples” is based on a Polish melody.
Arrangements are by Paul French, the talented director
of music
at Chicago’s Lady of Mount Carmel Parish. Catholics
and Protestants will respond to these charming but
unsentimental New Testament songs.
